How to Master the Art of the Frugle Bar Tab

Drinking out doesn't have to drain your savings. With a little strategy, you can enjoy the atmosphere without the "morning-after" financial hangover.
1. The Pre-Game Strategy
The oldest trick in the book. Enjoy one or two drinks at home before you head out. You'll arrive with a "buzz" already started, meaning you’ll buy fewer $14 cocktails at the venue.
2. Hunt for Happy Hour
Timing is everything. Most bars offer significant discounts between 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM.
* Look for: Half-price appetizers and $2 off drafts.
* The Pro Move: Order your last "discount" round five minutes before happy hour ends.
3. Stick to "Well" Spirits
When you order a Gin & Tonic, specify "well gin." Unless you have a very refined palate, the house-brand liquor tastes just fine when drowned in mixer, and it’s usually several dollars cheaper than "call" brands like Tanqueray or Hendrick's.
4. Embrace the "Beer and a Shot" Special
Many dive bars offer a "City Special" (usually a PBR and a shot of whiskey). It is almost always the best alcohol-to-dollar ratio in the building.
5. Drink Water Between Rounds
This is a double win. It keeps you hydrated (preventing a hangover) and naturally slows down your consumption rate. If you have a glass of water in your hand, you’re less likely to reflexively order another expensive beer just to have something to hold.
6. Avoid the "Open Tab" Trap
Closing your tab after every round makes the cost "real" immediately. When you keep a tab open, it’s easy to lose track of how many $12 IPAs you’ve actually downed until the scary piece of paper arrives at 1:00 AM.
7. Skip the Fancy Cocktails
Anything with more than three ingredients, fresh-pressed juice, or "house-made bitters" is a luxury item. Stick to simple two-ingredient pours (Rum and Coke, Vodka Soda) or bottled domestic beer.
Quick Tip: Always tip your bartender well on the first round—even if you're being cheap. Good service often leads to "heavy pours" or the occasional "on the house" drink later in the night.
